Sarah Stefana Smith

Sarah Stefana Smith works predominately in photography, sculpture, and installation. Her work has exhibited in spaces including DC Art Center (Washington D.C.), Arlington Art Center (Arlington), Borland Project Space (State College), Waller Gallery (Baltimore), Gallery CA (Baltimore) and David Spectrum (Toronto). Her artist residencies include the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Feminist Art Conference, Vermont Studio Center, and 40th Street Artist in Residence. Smith has published in The Black Scholar, Women & Performance and the Palgrave Handbook on Race and the Arts in Education, among others. Smith received her PhD from the University of Toronto (2016) and an MFA from Goddard College (2010). She is the 2018-2020 Postdoctoral Fellow of Academic Diversity at American University where she teaches in the Critical Race, Gender and Cultural Studies Collaborative and in Studio Art. Sarah will begin an Assistant Professorship in Gender Studies at Mount Holyoke College in July 2020.
