Noel S. Anderson, PhD, a Clinical Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at NYU’s Steinhardt. Noel is also a fiction writer, “N.S. Anderson”. His novella, By Nightfall, is set in Paris in 1961. It follows Solomon Painter, a young man from an all-Black town in St. Louis known as “the Ville,” who dreams of writing in Paris like James Baldwin and Richard Wright before him. Once in Paris, Solomon experiences the beauty and freedom he envisioned—and falls in love. But as he witnesses the racism and discrimination endured by North Africans amid the Algerian War, he abandons his novel and becomes a pamphleteer for the cause of liberation.
