Curatorial Specialist, Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture

Johanna Obenda is a cultural practitioner, curator, and educator. She is a curatorial specialist at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Johanna is a curator and the lead exhibition developer of the internationally traveling exhibition “In Slavery’s Wake: Making Black Freedom in the World” and co-editor of the companion publication. She holds a MA in Public Humanities from Brown University. Johanna’s work centers exhibition development, African diasporic arts and material culture, and multi-media storytelling.
