He/Him; They/Them

Doctoral Candidate, Bard Graduate Center

Joshua Massey is a doctoral candidate at Bard Graduate Center in New York City, where he studies the material culture of the contemporary American South. His dissertation explores the yard environments of four “self-taught” Black artists in Alabama and Mississippi and the ways in which they have been encountered, documented, interpreted, and preserved from the 1980s to the present. Massey holds a master’s degree in decorative arts, design history, and material culture, also from Bard Graduate Center, and a bachelor’s degree in American Studies and Comparative Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
