Curator of Art, Amistad Research Center

Paula Allen is a curator and educator whose work examines Black visual culture and diasporic memory. She is Curator of Fine and African art at the Amistad Research Center and has worked with the institution at various points since 1997, overseeing museum collections valued at approximately $25 million dollars. Allen has lead major conservation and access initiatives and served as project director for an IMLS funded project. She has stewarded significant acquisitions and contributed scholarship to Oxford University Press and Harvard University publications. Her work centers on how Black artists narrate space, ritual, continuity, and collective memory through material and visual culture.
