Before joining the faculty at Swarthmore, he had been a staff photojournalist at The Philadelphia Inquirer for 32 years, where he shares a 2012 Pulitzer Prize for his work on a series documenting school violence in the Phila-delphia public school system. He is author of the book The Long Ride Home: Black Cowboys in America, and co-author of the book We Were There: Voices of African American Veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tarver is the recipient of Guggenheim and Pew Fellowships.
