Thabang Monoa’s research interests are in art history, aesthetic theory, art criticism, and curatorial practice. His doctoral study, from which he is developing a monograph, focused on the notion of Blackness in Afrofuturist aesthetics. Monoa formed part of a small cohort of eminent art historians that participated in the 2023 Getty programme convened by the College Art Association (CAA); he is a former council member of South African Visual Art Historians (SAVAH); he is a co-convenor of the Gerard Sekoto Winter/Summer School, which is administered through the Johannesburg Art Gallery and has recently began to serve on the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA) journal interim editorial board. In his current capacity as a lecturer in art history at the University of Cape Town’s Michealis School of Fine Art, Monoa continues to produce work dealing with concerns in modern and contemporary art and aesthetics in both scholarly and non-academic forums.
