Jonathan K. Nelson, PhD, has lectured and published extensively on Italian Renaissance art. His recent work focuses on the inclusion and marginalization of Blacks, especially Ethiopian Christians, in Renaissance paintings. His books include studies of Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Filippino Lippi, Robert Mapplethorpe, Michelangelo, Plautilla Nelli, and two volumes in collaboration with the economist Richard Zeckhauser: The Patron’s Payoff and Risks in Renaissance Art. He co-edits the Elements in the Renaissance series for Cambridge UP, served as Assistant Director of I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies (where he created two online exhibitions about Bernard Berenson), and has taught art history at Syracuse University in Florence since 1994.
