Michael Dinwiddie is an associate professor of dramatic writing at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study. He has moderated and presented at Black Portraiture conferences in New York City; Florence, Italy; Paris, France; Johannesburg, South Africa, and Boston, Massachusetts A creative entrepreneur whose projects span theatre, film, magazine and music publishing, he serves on the boards of the August Wilson Society, NewFest LGBTQ+ Film and Media, the College of Fellows of the American Theatre, and the Black Theatre Network. Michael is co-chair, with Laurence Maslon, of the Committee to Commemorate the African Grove, which was constructed in 1821 and was the first theatre built “for us, by us, about us, and near us.” Michael’s archival research, and an anonymous donor, led to the naming of The African Grove Theatre in NYU’s newly constructed John A. Paulson Center, which is located at Bleecker and Mercer Streets, where the theatre once stood.
