Carmel Ohman is an English Ph.D. candidate at the University of Oregon working in African American literature and visual culture and sexuality studies. Her dissertation – titled Sex, Power, and Embodied Performance in U.S. Black Feminist Novels and T.V., 1975-2018 – asks how Black feminist texts reimagine dominant ideas about sexual harm and freedom. Carmel is the recipient of awards and fellowships from the Center for the Study of Women in Society at the University of Oregon and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
