J.M. Nimocks (they/the,) is a trans*- disciplinary artist and scholar living, loving and creating on the stolen land of the Council of Three Fires comprised of the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations- as well as the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac, Fox, Kickapoo, and Illinois Nations also known as Chicago, Illinois. They are the descendant of Black American land stewarts in Sunflower, Mississippi, and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Their work is invested in building utopias that are multisensory, ethereal, and escape western ontological webs of assumptions about humanism. Their intention is to move towards the possibilities of rhizomatic relationality through their creative labor. J.M. is deeply committed to black feminist praxis, disability studies, trans* theory, affect, and ecological systems as viable avenues for liberating existences. J.M. is a part of the mainstream ballroom scene as a member of the Iconic International House of Ninja and performs under the moniker Bijoux Blyndex Ninja. Energetic herbalism is also instrumental to the artists’ practice and J.M. takes seriously their commitments to strengthening their relationship to the ecosystems of their ancestors. Currently, they are a PhD student at Northwestern University in the African American Studies Department focusing on the fields of philosophy, environmental humanities, black trans* feminist theory, and performance studies. J.M. cohabitates with their beloved bunny companion, Medusa.
