Mimi Owusu is a third-year PhD student in teaching/teacher education at the University of Michigan. She researches the cultural, political, intellectual, and historical aspects of Black girls’ dance practices on social media. She particularly explores the ways that they have led the recent iteration of dance challenges on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Dubsmash, which has been instrumental to influencing the ways that people have used social media during the Covid-19 pandemic. An intersection between play and performance, her research is invested in humanizing Black girls, seeing their full potential, and unpacking the ways that they construct fugitive spaces.
