Trinidad and Tobago native Chief Erelu Awo (Natalya Mills) is a West African Yoruba and art philosopher, Caribbean culture and costume historian and visual culture scholar whose writings and research integrates aspects of West African and Caribbean philosophy, art philosophy, Carnival arts and Caribbean history with a central focus on dress, identity, body politics and creolization. Chief Erelu Awo is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Art Theory and Philosophy at the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA) and is a 2017 David Driskell Fellow. This multidisciplinary scholarly artist currently works internationally with His Royal Majesty, Oba Akande Omiyejola-the Asin of Oka land and Chief Araba Oso, the President of the Assembly of Traditional Religious Worshippers in Ondo State Nigeria. Domestically she has worked with museums and cultural institutions such as the Brooklyn Historical Society, The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Spelman Museum of Fine Arts, Wyckoff House Museum, Brooklyn Arts Council and Weeksville Heritage Center. She has written scholarly articles for academic journals, presented at academic conferences internationally and has worked as a contributor and creative director for arts and non-profit organizations.
